WHAT IS SKIN COMPRISED OF? |
|
The skin is our first line of defense. Skin is made up of
several layers; the dermis, epidermis, and a layer of fat. At
the base of the epidermis new skin cells are constantly being
produced. The upper layers are primarily dead skin cells, which
as a waterproof barrier. The dermis provides a foundation for the epidermis to
lie upon. Under these two layers of the skin is a layer of fat
which works primarily as an insulator. Within the dermis we can
find blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, oil glands and sweat
glands. The blood vessels and sweat glands help us to regulate
body temperature. The oil glands produce sebum which moisturizes
the skin. Within the skin there are also melanocytes which
produce melanin. Melanin gives our skin its pigment and helps to
protect us from UV light.

WHAT DOES SKIN DO? |

Skin is the largest organ in the body. It makes up about 16% of
our body weight and covers a surface area of approximately
1.8mē. As mentioned above, the skin is our first line of
defense. It is essential for life. It protects us from
environmental assaults such as pollution, UV light, retains
fluid, protects us from disease, eliminates waste products and
regulates temperature
